Congratulations, mama! You’ve just crossed the fourth trimester — the first three months after delivery. Now that you’ve grown used to the sleepless nights (somewhat, at least!) and mastered breastfeeding, you can consider organising your baby’s 100-day celebration. 100 Days Celebration Customs And Traditions

A 100-day celebration is traditional in Chinese culture, as it is in some other Asian countries as well. While get-togethers are also common at the end of the baby’s first month, the 100-day one is preferred because it marks the end of the most vulnerable period for new babies and mums or, in some cases, an end to confinement.

This celebration used to be fairly traditional with symbolic gifts, gold jewellery and red packets handed down from the older family members and well-wishers, as well as prayers and auspicious food being offered by the parents to their ancestors. In addition to this, often a lock of the baby’s hair would be cut and the bub would get his or her Chinese name (even if the Western name was already announced). The proud parents would also distribute red eggs (symbols of fertility) and pickled ginger to the guests. Nowadays, things are not quite as traditional and each couple is free to make up its own family traditions for this special day.

100 Days Celebration Party Venues

The first decision, after deciding to host a 100 days celebration, of course, is deciding on a party venue and catering options. There’ll be babies and kids present (obviously!) but at the same time it isn’t strictly a kids’ party, so you’ll need to consider space to play, baby changing, feeding facilities and your baby’s nap schedule. Also, it should go without saying that you’re hosting a celebration whilst looking after a three-month-old baby, so you’ll want to consider how much you can take on and delegate duties where you can!

Walking And Hiking

If you’ve never really been a fan of the gym or you’re starting to take it a little slower, why not explore some of Hong Kong’s walking trails? Depending on what you’re in the mood for, there are various walking routes for every level.

Prenatal Swimming

Swimming is an excellent activity during pregnancy, both for prenatal fitness, as you won’t be stressing your joints, and for relaxation. Head to hotel pools (and make it a babymoon!) or the beach for a dose of sunshine and salt while you float. It’s also a great excuse for a new set of swimmers! Don’t forget the sunscreen.

Cycling

Cycling might not be as comfortable during the later stages of pregnancy and the more your bump grows the more unbalanced you might begin to feel. Opt for a stationary bike when this happens as it is still a great form of cardiovascular exercise. But, if you’re more of an outdoorsy mama and you still feel comfortable on two wheels, try taking the bike out for a spin. Don’t own a bike? There are plenty of bike rental shops near popular biking trails.

Maternity And Newborn Photography Tips From Experienced Hong Kong Photographers

Timing – Maternity Photography

The ideal time for a professional pregnancy photoshoot is early in your third trimester. At this stage, the bump is in its best shape, and Mamas are not too uncomfortable to move around.

Timing – Newborn Photography

For a professional newborn shoot, try to plan it within the first fortnight. At this stage, babies have the lovely fresh-out-of-the-oven look and these pictures have an almost unreal, dream-like quality. If you prefer to wait a bit, most photographers also offer sitter sessions and milestone shoots.

Clothing – Maternity Photography

Your photographer will be able to help with sheer and draped material that can give your maternity photoshoot a beautiful, feminine look. If you are comfortable, show some skin – take off your bra and trust your photographer to use the perfect angles to capture your beautiful baby-making body.

What you wear will also be determined by the location you choose, maternity shoots offer a lot of flexibility when it comes to location. There is something gorgeous about a sun-kissed pregnancy photoshoot at a Hong Kong beach. Similarly, if there is a special story to your baby’s journey, you may like to bring that out with your choice of shoot venue.

Clothing – Newborn Photography

Newborn shoots are usually taken at home. This allows Mamas and babies to be comfortable and natural, sleep comfortably while shots are being set up, etc. If you do choose to shoot at a studio, most newborn photographers are well set up with temporary baby-changing facilities and even a comfortable chair for mum to use while feeding.

Mamas-to-be can naturally be quite awkward about being the centre of attention. Start off slow by taking pictures of only your belly – highlight your bump by placing your fingers in a heart shape around the bump. If you have an older child, you can have him or her kiss your stomach.

Your specialist newborn photographer will know this. Always choose a pose that is safe for a newborn and doesn’t stress the neck.

Props – Maternity Photography

Props for a professional pregnancy shoot are easy. You could use your pregnancy scans, a favourite onesie, baby shoes or mum-to-be sashes that you wore for your baby shower. The highlight of every shoot is growing inside of you and don’t really need to highlight much else.

Props – Newborn Photography

If you have beautiful bedding and swaddles, you could use those as props. Most photographers will bring their own props which could include flower wreaths, toy trains (to lie the baby in), baskets and blankets.
