When water is your landing ground, it’s the perfect excuse to go all out! Of course, safety precautions still need to be taken (especially when it comes to the safety of your little ones) so we’ve rounded up some Sassy Mama approved water sports that really allow you to have a splashin’ good time. Snorkelling And Scuba Diving In Hong Kong

Hong Kong may not have the cleanest waters, but you’d be surprised at the marine life you can spot out in Clearwater Bay (the hint’s in the name). It’s also a great base location to learn how to scuba dive at your own pace before you plan a diving holiday in Asia. We recommend getting a scuba diving certification (beginner and technical diving options below) here in Hong Kong and starting here before heading out overseas. Sham Shui Po Park – Longest outdoor slide on the island?

This 6,400 square metre children’s outdoor playground boasts three large nature-themed play zones and (apparently) the longest slide in Hong Kong. Kids will love the “Sandy Bunker” zone featuring climbing towers, a sand pit and a spiral tube slide, the “Jungle Meadow” zone with swings, flower bells and petal drums and the “Oasis Spring” zone with a splash sensory wall, octopus fountain and trampolines.

MOKO Children’s Playground – Large outdoor park in Mong Kok

Located on the fourth floor at MOKO, this children’s playground was the talk of the town when it first opened in 2021! It covers an area of 18,000 feet. It has a climbing wall that is 8 metres off the ground, bird-themed play equipment with slides, rope climbers, swings and more. What makes it even better is that it’s right next to the food court where you can take the kids after playtime!

Tsuen Wan Plaza Play Area – Toddler-friendly outdoor park

With a colourful rainbow theme, this outdoor playground has an eight-metre-tall tower with three slides, perfect for kids who love adventure (and are not afraid of heights!). It also has a climbing castle, a spinning rope to climb on and mini hills with ropes and slides. For the little tots, there are bouncy clouds, musical tubes and baby swings.

Shung Ling Street Playground, Wong Tai Sin – Green park that inspires creativity

Incorporating its green surroundings into the design, this playground features a nest swing, a carousel, a climbing play house and ball-shaped balancing play facilities. Another hidden gem is this dinosaur-themed outdoor playground tucked away in Choi Hung. It makes for a great day out for the kids, as they explore caves and discover all things dinosaurs. The playground also has a 7-a-side soccer pitch, tennis courts and table tennis facilities.

Kowloon Tsai Park – Outdoor playground suitable for all ages

Home to a beautiful Bauhinia garden with around 120 bauhinia trees, Kowloon Tsai Park is located near Kowloon Tong Station Exit E. There are soccer pitches, a roller skating rink, a jogging track, a children’s playground, plus a dog garden for your furry friends.

Kowloon Park, Tsim Sha Tsui – Playground for bird-lovers (adults and kids!)

Just like Hong Kong Park on the other side of the harbour, Kowloon Park has a beautiful lake and plays host to 18 different species of birds (including some rather fabulous flamingos). Facilities include football pitches, extensive gardens, an ornamental maze and a playground. Also on site is Kowloon Park’s huge aquatic centre with several indoor and outdoor pools and Kowloon Park Sports Centre, with sports halls and courts galore. Wan Chai Promenade Playground – Tunnel through greenery in Wan Chai

The Wan Chai Promenade starts near Tamar Park in Admiralty and has children’s play areas with colourful tunnels, decorative lights, swings, slides and more. For some extra family fun, there are two-seater and four-seater ducky pedal boats, though you’ll have to book online in advance.

King’s Road Playground – Bounce and swing at North Point’s outdoor park

This outdoor playground is a nice one to stop by if you happen to be in North Point. While it doesn’t have a lot of play equipment, the kids will still love to run around its colourful safety mats and enjoy the slide, trampoline and swings.

If the spectacular view, vintage tram ride, yummy food and stunning Sky Terrace up at Victoria Peak aren’t enough to keep the little ones amused, then the Mount Austin Playground is bound to. Close to the fabulous Kennedy Town swimming pool, this park has a children’s playground, a grassy area, a fitness arena and a jogging path. Created by a Hong Kong-based arts social enterprise, the seating at this outdoor playground was made using upcycled disposed timber. “Fung Cheung” translates to “Soaring Pheonix” in English, so you’ll find lots of bird-themed features here including a nest swing, play tower, climbing facilities, playhouse and more.

Can’t figure out a way to make veggies fun for kids? A trip to Fun Park at Metroplaza might do the trick! This children’s outdoor playground has play facilities in the shape of colourful giant vegetables. There’s a 3.5-metre tall turbo tube slide, adult-toddler swings and an outdoor garden filled with seasonal flowers.

Tai Po Waterfront Park – Scenic park with multiple outdoor facilities

At 22 hectares, Tai Po Waterfront Park is one of the biggest parks in the city. There are playgrounds, a gateball court, a bowling green and a large model boating lake. Kids will love the creepy crawlies at the Insect House, but the best part of the park may be the 1.2km long promenade, which takes advantage of the lovely setting and provides a nice level space for cycling or enjoying a relaxing stroll.

Kwong Fuk Park, Tai Po – Outdoor playground for little ones

If you’re in Tai Po, you could also check out the slightly lesser-known Kwong Fuk Park. It has a colourful playground that includes climbing facilities, play panels, slides and rocking chairs that your kiddo will love.

The Best Beach Playgrounds In Hong Kong

When you’re spending a day at the beach (don’t forget your swimming cossie and sunscreen!), the sprawling sands are usually enough to keep the children occupied. Of course, having a playground close at hand means you could stretch your day out at the seaside that little bit further! A number of our favourite Hong Kong Island and New Territories beaches have small outdoor playgrounds for kids.

Within the city, these spots are often quite small but serve the purpose if you want to have your kids throw a ball for your playful pups. Other places we love include the West Kowloon Waterfront Park, Penfold Park, Discovery Bay and Stanley Plaza, where there are enough activities and more than enough space for the whole family to enjoy.

Top Outdoor Activities For Teens In Hong Kong

Beaches

If your teen is looking to enjoy a day out in the sun, Hong Kong has a wealth of beautiful beaches that are only a short hop on public transport away, if you’re not already lucky enough to have one within walking distance! Those seeking a little more privacy on a smaller, more remote beach might prefer a junk boat trip. Most will even do catering packages, so grab your friends and their kids (or your teenager’s friends) and prepare for a little getaway. Just be sure to bring sunscreen and don a swimsuit if you plan to get your feet a little wet!

Hikes

Hong Kong may be best known for its skyscrapers and closely packed buildings, but there’s also plenty of nature to explore in this concrete jungle. The city has several great hiking paths, with something for everyone, whether you’re an amateur who prefers flat ground or a professional who loves high altitudes. There’s no better way to get some exercise than up on a hill, taking in amazing views of the city from up high (not to mention all the Insta-worthy shots!).

Public Libraries

With 70 static locations and 12 mobile ones, a public library can be just the place for some quiet alone time for your teens. Our favourite is the Central Library in Causeway Bay, with a wealth of facilities and the largest collection of books. If they want to take something home at the end of the day, getting a library card is as easy as filling in a form – you can even register your HKID as a library card.

Sassy Mama Tip: To avoid fines, renew your book loan or even request for a book to be transported to the closest library to you, get the public libraries app on your phone. Simply log in and you’ll be sent reminders to renew or return your books – so no more marking calendars.

Swimming Pools In Hong Kong

This is another family favourite! Beat the heat by spending a day poolside or showing off your cannonball. Hong Kong has lots of public pools and hotel pools around the city with options for any budget.

Picnics In The Park

The Hong Kong government has invested a good amount of money in creating these welcome breaks from our towering buildings, making it a great place to go for teens to hang out with their friends this summer. Make a day of it by bringing a hamper and a picnic blanket, and people-watch and play card games to your heart’s content.

The Top Public Swimming Pools In Hong Kong For Kids And Families

With plenty of affordable public swimming pools in Hong Kong to choose from, there’s no reason not to grab your kids and dive in! Why not try out a nearby swimming pool or make a trip to enjoy the variety of public pools with water slides, fountains, splash buckets and more.

The best way to cool off this summer is to jump into some of the fabulous public swimming pools in Hong Kong. We are spoiled for choice with 44 public swimming pools in all corners of Hong Kong, so chances are, there’s one not too far away. Admission price to the LCSD pools is fixed no matter where you go, $17 for adults on weekdays and $19 on weekends and public holidays. For children (aged 3 to 13 years) and seniors, it’s $8 on weekdays and $9 on weekends and public holidays. Toddlers under 3 years get in free!

We’ve been caught out promising the kids water slides only to find the kids’ swimming pools shut. It’s a good idea to call ahead to check if the facilities you want to use are open. Phone numbers for each pool are included in the listings below.

Kennedy Town Swimming Pool

Conveniently located and easy to get to from Central, the Kennedy Town Swimming Pool is always a favourite with kids! There are two indoor pools, a Jacuzzi and two outdoor swimming pools – one for the kids with water slides, colourful plastic animals and the works, and the other for mamas, papas and big kids! It’s right opposite Belcher’s Bay Park, so if your kids haven’t expended all their energy swimming, you can always hop across to the outdoor playground for some more playtime, while you get your daily run.

Victoria Park Swimming Pool

Hong Kong Island’s biggest public swimming pool complex in Causeway Bay is the place to go if you have a kid who loves to dive, as the deep end is an impressive 5m (whoa!). There is even a dedicated diving pool and while you have to be in a class to use the big boards, anyone can bounce off the 1m springboard. It’s the perfect swimming pool to visit if you’re planning to stay out for the entire day as it’s close to the Central Public Library, plenty of restaurants and of course, there’s an abundance of playgrounds in the park itself.

The first public swimming pool to open in Hong Kong, Morrison Hill swimming pool is located in the heart of Wan Chai and is a popular choice for families nearby, especially for those with small children as there’s not only an outdoor training pool but also a quiet toddler pool where the very little ones can splash around in peace.

Jordan Valley Swimming Pool

Jordan Valley is a fab little-kid-friendly swimming pool in Hong Kong, ideal for preschoolers, kindergarteners and little swimmers under 10 years old. In addition to a pool for laps only, you’ll find an area with lots of fun stuff for the kids – water slides (including baby slides…yay!), water-squirting dolphins and sharks, floating mini aquatic animals to sit on, a water fountain to dance under and lots more.

Kowloon Park Swimming Pool

You cannot miss this large family-friendly swimming pool complex! Make it a complete day out by enjoying the lovely playground, taking your little ones to see a flock of flamingoes and then cooling off by jumping into the swimming pool.

A popular indoor pool option for Sai Ying Pun families to take a quick dip. There’s a full-length 50m pool as well as a 25m training pool for regular lap swimmers.

There are fountains and floating animals – including a massive sea serpent (or is it a dragon?) that you can climb all over. Need we say more?

Tai Po Swimming Pool

Impress your kids with the longest water slides in Hong Kong! Although it’s a bit of a trek to get there, the Tai Po Swimming Pool‘s three-storey water slides will stop any kiddie complaints about the journey in their tracks. The swimming pool does get a little crowded during the weekends, but with seven pools available, including children’s and leisure pools, it never really gets that bad.
