Guilin, China

A serene mountainous region in southern China, Guilin is just about three hours away via high speed rail. The dry season makes it an ideal time to hike around the countryside (if you have older kids), and we have travelled to Guilin with a toddler on a pram and it’s definitely doable! Explore inside caves, shop around the market and take in nature – for the adventurous Mamas and Papas, you can also paraglide and admire the stunning bird’s eye view!

Siargao, The Philippines

For a tropical getaway during Christmas, Siargao’s pristine white sandy beaches with crystal-clear turquoise waters, delicious food, trendy shops and loads of kids’ activities make for an unforgettable family vacation. The dry and sunny weather means you get to try out watersports and explore the island, and personally, Mamas would love to just unwind at a beach or resort because it’s been a year! Do note that getting to Siargao means a minimum of two flights – fly to Manila and hop on another plane to Siargao Airport.

Hoi An, Vietnam

Yes, Hoi An is touristy but it’s a firm favourite amongst the Sassy Mama team so we wouldn’t complete this list without it. Even during peak travel season, Hoi An and Vietnam in general remains affordable and we may be biased here, but the food, hospitality and natural charm is unparalleled in this vibrant town. Of course, a walk around the Ancient Town is a must, you can also take the kids to Ba Na Hills, Pottery Village and My Son Sanctuary – extend the trip but staying a couple days in Da Nang.

Hong Kong Disneyland Tickets And Annual Passes

It’s best to organise your Disneyland tickets in advance. Currently, you can book a week in advance by booking online.

Hong Kong Disneyland One-Day Standard Tickets

Adults: Starts at $669 (new price starting Wednesday, 25 September 2024)
Kids (aged 3 to 11 years): Starts at $499; Kids (under 3) – FREE!
Seniors (aged 65+): Starts at $499

These prices mentioned above are Level 1 Standard tickets and can be purchased up to three months in advance. These are valid on ordinary weekdays. There are also Level 2 tickets (Fridays to Sundays), Level 3 tickets (standard public holidays) and Level 4 tickets (the busiest days of the year like Christmas and New Year’s Eve) where the price goes up to $939 per adult and $705 per child/senior.

Hong Kong Disneyland Discounted Tickets

Always keep your eye out for special resident deals and packages. KKDay also offers good deals, discounts and packages.

Hong Kong Disneyland Magic Access Passes

If you think your family will be enjoying multiple days out at Disneyland then it might be worth investing in a Magic Access Pass. Choose from Silver, Gold or Platinum passes; the main difference being the blackout dates. Generally speaking, with a Silver pass, the perks don’t apply on weekends, public holidays and for a couple of weeks over Chinese New Year and in the summer. The Gold pass only restricts you over Chinese New Year. There are no blackout dates with the Platinum pass.

There are other benefits too, including dining and retail discounts, free parking (with gold and platinum) and other special offers. Be sure to check the fine print — some dining offers are only available for certain months of the year, with certain outlets excluded.

Visitor Tips From Hong Kong Disneyland

Advice from Hong Kong Disneyland to help you plan your day, supplemented with Sassy Mama experiences at the park.

  • Make sure you download the Hong Kong Disney mobile app. An absolute must for any Disney adventure, the app includes wait times for rides and attractions, maps, schedules and more, making it easier than ever to make the most of your time in the Magic Kingdom!
  • Get the kids involved in your planning. Prioritise their favourite rides (more on that coming up!) and plan to tick these big hitters off as soon as you get to the park.
  • The audio guides, available at the Guest Relations on Main Street, U.S.A., are another handy tool to help you make your way around the park and feature helpful information about attractions, rides and services at Hong Kong Disneyland. While a deposit of $1,000 is required to rent a guide, this deposit is refundable as long as you return the guide before the park closes for the day.
  • Keep an eye out for PhotoPass locations where you can have professional family photos taken. While you can view the photos online or on the Disney HK app, there are also various locations scattered around the entire park where you can purchase a more permanent souvenir of your magical day.
  • If you’re visiting during a festive time like Chinese New Year, Halloween or Christmas, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a place that gets more into the festive spirit than Disneyland. Factor special seasonal events and attractions into your schedule — they’re not to be missed! Scroll down to find this year’s Halloween specials.

Hong Kong Disneyland Rides, Attractions And Shows

You have seven lands to visit: Adventureland, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Grizzly Gulch, Mystic Manor, Toy Story Land and the newly opened Frozen World.

If you have the two-day ticket, divide your time between the different lands by seeing half on your first day and the remaining half on your last. Whichever land you’re in, indulge yourself in some live Disney entertainment and be sure to check out the showtimes.

If you are there for a day, you may not be able to cover all the lands, so pick the characters, stories and themes that your children (and accompanying adults!) are most familiar with and fond of.

Best Hong Kong Disneyland Rides For Kids Under 5

Our young kids are big fans of The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh ride (this is a hugely popular one so put it early in your schedule!), Dumbo The Flying Elephant and the Cinderella Carousel in Fantasyland, the Jungle River Cruise in Adventureland (watch out for the scarily-real fires!) and the Slinky Dog Spin (although the under-threes might get a bit scared by the speed) in Toy Story Land.

Best Hong Kong Disneyland Rides For Older Kids

Tomorrowland is sure to be a hit with older kids and teens with rides like the Iron Man Experience, Ant-Man And The Wasp and Hyperspace Mountain. There are also some great options in Toy Story Land with the Toy Soldier Parachute Drop and the Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars in Grizzly Gulch.

Hong Kong Disneyland Rides With Air Conditioning

When you need a break from the outdoors put It’s A Small World and Mickey’s PhilharMagic on the agenda. Both let you sit down in some much-needed A/C!

Shows And Other Attractions At Hong Kong Disneyland

Hong Kong Disneyland

The Hong Kong Disneyland Railroad got back on track last years after a five-year closure! It offers guests a magically nostalgic perspective of the park.

In addition to catching all of your favourite princesses and characters, be sure to catch the Mickey And The Wondrous Book show as your little ones will be dazzled by the performance, or let them test their lightsaber skills with some Jedi Training at Tomorrowland with a chance to fight Darth Vader himself. The Festival Of The Lion King is fantastic for all ages, and our tip for the Moana show is to get your kids seats at the front so they can join in the singing and dancing!

Do you have a bit of an artistic streak? Enrol your kids in the Animation Academy, where they can learn to draw Disney and learn about the magic behind their favourite cartoons.

Hong Kong Disneyland Halloween Special 2024

Halloween Attractions At Hong Kong Disneyland

We love the seasonal specials at Hong Kong Disneyland every year and Halloween promises a horrifyingly good time this year! Halloween specials very aptly start on Friday, 13 September and continue until Thursday, 31 October 2024. There are plenty of discounts for groups so gather your kids and their friends, put on your most terrifying costumes and get up to 20% off group tickets for residents.

Halloween Attractions At Hong Kong Disneyland 2024:

  • Disney heroes and villains assemble — Do your kids love meeting their Disney characters? Through this season, the villains from Disney join their good counterparts. Expect the Queen and Snow White, Maleficent and Princess Aurora and the Queen of Hearts and Alice. You’ll also see brothers Loki and Thor in stores!
  • House of De Vil-lains — Cruella De Vil plays host along with other super villains from the Disney universe. Expect heart-pounding music and projections, and artistic villain-themed installations.

World Of Frozen At Hong Kong Disneyland

The world’s first and largest Frozen World opened in Hong Kong Disneyland last year and has been transporting delighted kids to the magical land of Arendelle since. You can expect a Frozen-themed rollercoaster — Wandering Oaken’s Sliding Sleighs — as well as Frozen Ever After, where you will be invited to Elsa’s Ice Palace for a special “Summer Snow Day”.

Hong Kong Disneyland Fireworks

The night-time show “Momentous” takes visitors on a 20-minute heartwarming journey through your favourite Disney classics. You can expect the Disney castle to come to life with multimedia projections, theatrical lighting, lasers, choreographed fountains, pyrotechnics and, of course, fireworks! Food At Hong Kong Disneyland

It will take all your willpower not to indulge in some of the famous Mickey-themed treats. So, why deny yourself?

You can check out all the Disney dining options before you go, but some of our favourites are the Disney-themed dim sum at Crystal Lotus (in the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel) and Mickey-shaped doughnuts and waffles at the Main Street Bakery, as well as the famous Mango Dole Whip, found at Jessie’s Snack Roundup in Toy Story Land with some piping hot churros – the perfect amusement park snack!

Dietary needs and allergies? No problem. Check this guide out before you go and find out more about how all of your family’s needs can be managed and accommodated before you head off to the Magic Kingdom, including requesting special meals.

Can You Bring Your Own Food To Disneyland?

The good news is yes, you can! If you can’t bear the thought of spending unnecessarily, want some healthier options or have some particularly fussy eaters, don’t fret. You’re allowed to bring your own lunch, snacks, fruit and baby food from home. Just find a comfy outdoor space to enjoy it. Another good tip would be to bring your own water bottles before heading to Disney as a bottle there can easily go for $24! There are refill stations located around the park (usually near the restrooms).

How To Get To Hong Kong Disneyland

MTR to Hong Kong Disneyland

This is probably the most convenient way for most families to get to Disneyland. Take the Tung Chung line to Sunny Bay and switch to the dedicated Disneyland train — complete with Mickey-shaped windows!

Catching the bus to Hong Kong Disneyland

The R8 bus runs from the Lantau Link Toll Plaza (via Inspiration Lake between 9am and 7pm) and costs just $7.

Taxi or Uber to Hong Kong Disneyland

If you prefer to travel on your own schedule, an Uber or Taxi from Central Hong Kong will take about 30 to 40 minutes and cost $250 to $350. Please note though this is highly dependent on traffic and where exactly you are travelling from.

Hong Kong Disneyland Car Park

There is a large, open-air car park right next to Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, along with additional parking available at each of the hotels and Inspiration Lake. There’s also a drop-off/pick-up zone if you want to drop the kids (with a responsible adult of course!) closer to the gates. Parking lots at Hong Kong Disneyland are open from 8:30am to two hours after the park closes.

Disneyland’s car park rates: Disneyland Park – $280 per day. Guests staying at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort hotels may park their cars at the hotel or the Hong Kong Disneyland Park private car park at $190 per vehicle per night during the hotel stay period.

You can also choose to park your cars at the hotels (subject to availability) or Inspiration Lake and walk it to Disneyland.

Hotels – $50 per hour (free with hotel booking); Inspiration Lake – $55 per hour.

Weather And When To Visit Hong Kong Disneyland

Our favourite time to visit Hong Kong Disneyland would be from October to January. Hong Kong’s winter isn’t too severe and even little ones will be able to handle it with the right amount of layers. Plus, the decorations for Halloween, Christmas and Chinese New Year are stunning and the ambience of Disneyland during the holidays is simply magical!

During the summer months, the heat and humidity can get oppressive. Be sure to pack your sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and water bottles.

Sassy Mama Tip: If you are visiting in summer or over a long weekend, consider treating yourself with a stay at one of the hotels. You can then hit the park as it opens, retire for a siesta and swim in the heat of the day, and return late in the afternoon when crowds have eased.

Hong Kong Disneyland Extended Opening Hours (On Holidays)

The park is open every day from 10:30am to 8:30pm. You can stay on even slightly longer after closing hours to take in the nighttime spectacular though rides and attractions will be closed.

Opening hours are sometimes extended for special events and holidays, so be sure to check the website or app for your chosen date.

Visiting Hong Kong Disneyland During A T3 Typhoon

We’ve all been there, the tickets are booked, the bags are packed and that notification comes up on your phone that there is a T3 Typhoon warning. In all likelihood, there might only be a hint of a breeze but unfortunately, it does mean that many of the rides at Hong Kong Disneyland will close.

Only indoor rides will operate while the T3 signal is hoisted. This means no Mad Hatter Teacups, Cinderella Carousel or Dumbo The Flying Elephant in Fantasyland (only Winnie the Pooh, It’s A Small World and Mickey’s PhilharMagic stay open). There are a few more rides in Tomorrowland (which the big kids will like) and performances like The Lion King still run.

Our verdict… if you have an annual pass and don’t mind the limited rides you can still have a fun day out. If this is your only trip to Hong Kong Disneyland or you’ve been saving this special family day as a treat for the kids, try and reschedule so you can get your money’s worth from your ticket. The T3 warning might deter visitors, but the ones who do visit will all be vying for the same few rides so you can still expect queues!

Hong Kong Disneyland Hotels

In true Disney fashion, Disneyland hotels are decked out with all kinds of fun paraphernalia, making it an absolute dream come true for your kids!

There are three hotels on offer: Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel, Disney Explorer’s Lodge and Disney’s Hollywood Hotel. Special offers change from time to time, so make sure to check out the website for information on promotions and vacation packages – you can usually find some good deals if you plan ahead and keep up with its seasonal and special offers.

The Disneyland Hotel is very traditional with that old-school Victorian grandeur. It’s got a great pool, a playground, an outdoor maze and an indoor kids’ room. There’s often entertainment to get you into the Disney spirit from the moment you step through the door and you can treat your little princesses to a Disney makeover at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique.

Sassy Mama Tip: This is the closest of the hotels to the park (about a 10 to 15 minute walk to the entrance) and a free shuttle is offered.

Explorer’s Lodge is a little cheaper than the Disneyland Hotel, but also more modern while the Hollywood Hotel is the most affordable of the three options, but also looking a little tired these days.

Sassy Mama Tip: You can use any of the hotel facilities across the properties no matter where you choose to stay.

Family-Friendly Facilities At Hong Kong Disneyland

They always say to travel light, but if you’ve got little ones to take care of, packing light isn’t exactly an option. Luckily, the park offers a variety of family-friendly services for your convenience.

Baby Care Facilities At Hong Kong Disneyland

The Baby Care Center located on Main Street, USA is the spot to feed, change and nurse your tykes. It’s staffed in case you need an extra hand and there are two nursing rooms with chairs (although the park is definitely breastfeeding-friendly everywhere!), a feeding area with high chairs, and a kitchen with a fridge, microwave and sink! There are also six companion restrooms conveniently located all over the park.

Strollers & Stroller Rentals At Hong Kong Disneyland

Strollers can sometimes get in the way. Don’t worry, stroller parking is available all over the park and outside every ride (keep your valuables with you though!). However, if you want your kids to run free without a stroller throughout the day, storage lockers are available for rental. You can always rent a stroller for the day ($150 per day plus a refundable $100 deposit).

Extra Hong Kong Disneyland Tips From Sassy Mama

Sassy Mama number peach 1If you have enthusiastic kids, plan to arrive at 10am. Not only will you be at the front of the queue, but entry to Main Street USA will start around 10:20am, so you can get to your chosen “land” by the time the rides start operating. That, or grab a well-needed coffee before the chaos!

Sassy Mama number peach 2Speaking of timing, if you’ve made the early start you should be able to get on three to four rides by 11:30am and maybe two more by 12:30pm. After 5pm, the lines are normally shorter again.

Sassy Mama number peach 3If you’re visiting in the summer heat, plan to watch the shows in the afternoon. This will give everyone a chance to rest tired legs and restore a second wind.

Sassy Mama number peach 4If you have a young child who still naps, take your own stroller. They’re far more likely to relax and have a snooze if it is familiar.

Sassy Mama number peach 5Plan to leave the park at least 20 to 30 minutes before closing. You’ll beat the transport crowds and save yourself time for the journey home when you’re all sure to be tired.

Sassy Mama number peach 6If you plan to visit more than three times a year, invest in the Gold Pass. If it is just a one-off visit, be sure to check for deals on KKDay.

Safety Tips While Taking Kids Skiing

Precautions While Skiing

Skiing is very exciting and often a rite of passage for those born in countries with snow, but it isn’t something all of us are used to. Keep these tips in mind for a safe family ski holiday.

  • Carry warm clothes, gloves, mittens, snow pants, etc. The sun can be harsh on the slopes so also carry lip balm and sunscreen. If you own ski gear, carry it along. Otherwise, be sure you get properly fitted snow boots, googles, helmets, etc. at any ski equipment rental shop close to the slopes.
  • Do your research and book ski training sessions and well-qualified instructors in advance. Even if you’re an experienced skier, refresher lessons help.
  • Don’t ski alone. Explain the dangers to the kids and make sure they stay within your sight while skiing.
  • Ask the instructor to explain the levels of the different ski slopes in the area so you know which is right for your skill level.
  • Pay attention to signs and marked paths on the ski slopes. Teach your kids to do the same.
  • Have the instructors teach the kids skiing etiquette, i.e., about who has right of way when there are many skiers and snowboarders.
  • Last but not the least, remember that skiing is incredibly tiring. Let your kids rest when they need to (and you should too!). An overtired child will not enjoy the experience and will not be ready to have a family skiing holiday every year!

Ski Seasons Around The World For Family Holidays

family ski resorts and ski seasons around the world

Naturally, there will always be an overlap in some places and with climate change, you might find that snow falls a little earlier or later than expected every year. Keep an eye out for announcements on the ski resorts’s websites while making bookings and for possible date adjustments.

January – March ski season

This is the best time to hit the slopes in Asia, particularly Hokkaido and Niseko in Japan and Pyeongchang in South Korea.

March – May ski season

The spring break is always a good time for skiing holidays to North America and Europe. Whistler in Canada always gets the vote of experienced skiers and Obertauern in Austria, Riksgränsen in Sweden and the Sunnmøre Alps in Norway are also popular around this time.

May – July ski season

You can get some of the slopes in North America in early May. Palisades Tahoe in California, USA is lovely around this time. Zermatt in Switzerland is also a good place to go skiing in Europe. But for the most part, when it’s our summer holidays, it’s time to head to the southern hemisphere for the slopes. Nevados de Chillán in Chile, Coronet Peak and Cardrona in New Zealand and Perisher in Australia make for the perfect skiing holidays at this time.

July – September ski season

Stay in the southern hemisphere for skiing around this time of the year. Las Lenas in Argentina is a great bet as is Portillo and Corralco in Chile. You could also go to Australia’s highest Alpine mountain, Mount Hotham.

September – November ski season

It’s time to head back to the Northern Hemisphere to ski in the autumn and early winter months. Ruka in Finland, Sölden in Austria and Breckenridge in Colorado in the USA are great options.

November – January ski season

France is a lovely place to go skiing at this time. Méribel and Val Thorens in France are always popular as are Cortina and Madonna di Campiglio in Italy. Closer home, you might want to try Gulmarg in the northern state of Kashmir in India.

What To Do And See In Phuket

Beaches To Visit In Phuket

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to do in Phuket what to see in Phuket beach bang tao surin

Phuket is absolutely teeming with amazing beaches and, really, the only problem is choosing the best ones!

  • Patong Beach is a favourite with the locals and tourists alike, and as such is very busy and the prices for water sports and beach activities skyrocket during high season, so be prepared!
  • On the other hand, Surin Beach is a much quieter area with a white beach and a gorgeous bay (and abundant parking, hallelujah!).
  • At Bangtao Beach you’ll usually find more expats who’ve elected to make Phuket their second home, so the beach bars will be packed with regulars who are generally friendly and staff who are used to tourists.
  • For something a little quieter and with great snorkelling, check out Kata Beach near the south end of Phuket.
  • Then you have Banana Beach. This practically deserted hidden beach is nothing short of picturesque with lush jungle foliage and intimidating rocks surrounding the secret strip of white sand. It is a bit of an effort to get to, but perfect if you have adventurous kiddos who want to connect with their inner explorer.

Adventure Activities For Kids In Phuket

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to do in Phuket what to see in Phuket atv riding adventure adrenaline atv bike quad bike

There’s a lot more in Phuket for little daredevils! Phuket is home to all kinds of high-adrenaline activities for the whole family, from white water rafting to ATV riding and even go-karting (we’re fans of anything that’ll burn off the kids’ excess energy!). There are a number of companies that offer packages with multiple activities that may well take up a whole day, so shop around until you find something that suits your family. For example, Klook has several experiences, such as one that includes an ATV tour to Big Buddha and ziplining, and through Get Your Guide you could visit the Monkey Cave, go Water Rafting and ziplining (for children above the age of 4).

Other adventure activities in Phuket:

  • Go-karting: If you have future F1 drivers on your hands, head to the Phuket Kart Speedway in Kathu where they have kids’ karts with a speed limit and double seaters so parents can take the little ones on a high-speed race.
  • Mini golf: Likewise, if you have a budding Tiger Woods at home, pop over to Phuket Adventure Mini Golf for some family fun amidst the perfectly manicured landscape, with a covered restaurant where you can stop for a quick drink and bite. You could even try the mini golf course at Dino Park if your kids want an extra challenge (with a bit of palaeontology mixed in) surrounded by dinosaurs!

Temples To Visit In Phuket

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to do in Phuket what to see in Phuket temple wat chalong

There is no shortage of cultural and sacred sites in Phuket, but some are more tourist-friendly than others. Wat Chalong is the largest temple on the island and frequently tops must-see lists (and with good reason). Open from 7am to 5pm, this Buddhist temple is the perfect place to learn more about the religion as well as take in some prime architecture. Just remember to dress appropriately, take your shoes off at the entrance and be respectful so as not to disturb those praying (this applies to all temples and places of worship).

While Hong Kong has its own Big Buddha, the 150-foot-tall marble statue in Phuket is certainly worth a visit too, especially to catch those gorgeous island sunsets.

In Old Phuket Town you’ll find the Jui Tui Shrine which is a Taoist temple – you might recognise the golden dragons and architecture from our own temples. While the canal it’s named for is no longer there, you should still drop by, particularly during October and November when the Phuket Vegetarian Festival is in full swing!

Museums To Visit In Phuket

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to do in Phuket what to see in Phuket museum upside down house

If you’ve had to drag your kids to the temples by their hair (no shame, we’ve all done it), treat them to this surprise: tell them you’re going to a museum next and take them to the 3D Museum (also known as The Trick Eye Museum). Have them pose in front of incredible art that’ll make them look like they’re jumping over lava or being eaten by sharks, and you’ll create memories for a lifetime. This is especially recommended if you have multiple kids, so they can position each other while you do your duty and capture the perfect angles!

For a unique experience we’re not sure you can get anywhere else, take the family to the Upside Down House – yes, it’s what it sounds like, the house is built upside down and the furniture is nailed to the ceiling, so in pictures it looks like you’re upside down. It’s the perfect way to let the kids’ creativity run wild! There’s even a maze for you to (try not to) get lost in if you’re looking for something even more interactive.

Theme Parks In Phuket: FantaSea, Andamanda & Splash Jungle

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to do in Phuket what to see in Phuket water park andamanda splash jungle

Known as Phuket’s ultimate cultural theme park, FantaSea is hard to miss as a vibrant family-friendly hotspot. Showcasing the best of Thai culture in a number of stage shows, animal encounters and buffets, this experience follows the legendary Prince of Kamala through Thailand’s rich history with no shortage of aerial acrobatics, authentic culinary delights, magic and elephants to spare.

Andamanda Phuket is a relatively new water park in Phuket, but it’s already making waves amongst locals and tourists alike. With a Thai-heritage theme, this is a great place – sprawling over 100,000 square metres – for kids to embrace Thai culture while having a splashing good time. There’s certainly something for everyone in the family, from the swim-up sand bar for the parents, to Phuket’s longest lazy river, to the Eagle Flyer ride for the older kids seeking an adrenaline high!

Splash Jungle is tried, tested and true. Built on a huge plot of land near the airport, with its own hotel for convenience, this water park ensures fun for all. It has a wave pool, multiple slides of increasing height and intensity, a dedicated kids’ zone including a Play Pool for the tiniest tots, and a family raft ride. It really is the water oasis it promises to be.

Day Trips From Phuket To Neighbouring Islands

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to do in Phuket what to see in Phuket island hopping james bond island koh phi phi

This is for cinephiles! Do you remember ‘The Beach’ with a young Leonardo DiCaprio? Well, a significant portion of that movie was filmed in none other than Koh Phi Phi (specifically Maya Bay) which is just a short boat trip from Phuket. Granted, it won’t be the secluded paradise you saw Leo and his co-stars lounge around in, but it is a scenic beauty nonetheless. Phi Phi remains a favourite amongst tourists for snorkelling and scuba diving, so if your teenagers are interested in marine life and love a splash, this is where to take them!

Then there’s Khao Phing Khan which is a group of islands home to James Bond Island, named after – you guessed it – ‘The Man With The Golden Gun’ which featured this location in 1974. This is another great option for a day out with the family as you can do an adventure tour that includes canoeing through a sea cave and lunch, or simply go island-hopping with a stop at this famously picturesque spot.

What’s In Phuket For Animal Lovers?

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to do in Phuket what to see in Phuket elephant sanctuary ethical elephant reserve nature

Knowing what we do about the practice of drugging and harming animals to make them more tourist-pliable in various parts of Thailand, we tend to veer away from places like Tiger Kingdom or tours that include elephant riding. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t animal-friendly places in Phuket you can take your kids to, it just requires some research. For example, if you wish to observe elephants (and maybe feed them too), check out an ethical company that prides itself on the rescuing and safekeeping of these incredible animals, such as Phuket Elephant Sanctuary, Phuket Elephant Nature Reserve and Hidden Forest Nature Reserve.

You might not think of Phuket as a great place to go horse-riding, but guess what? You can! Niran Equestrian Center hasn’t been around long, but it’s already been lauded for its loving treatment of the horses, its serene location and its classes tailored for all levels. Plus, its restaurant just opened offering much-needed respite for the mamas waiting for their kiddos to finish galloping around.

If you’re missing your fur babies at home, pop in to the Soi Dog Foundation (on a weekday) where you can meet the rescued pups of Phuket. This organisation has become famous thanks to many Instagram reels and you’ll know just why when you go on the free guided tour and spend time in the puppy enclosure and cattery. Be prepared to have your heart stolen! And if those weren’t enough puppy cuddles for you, head on over to Hug Me Café, Phuket’s best dog cafe (in our opinion) that has over a dozen puppers ready to run out and smother you with love.

Where To Eat And Drink In Phuket

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to eat in Phuket what to drink in Phuket old phuket town tu kab khai tkk thai food
It’s impossible to provide a definitive guide to eating and drinking in Phuket, simply because there are So. Many. Options. However, we can suggest where you can start and offer up some personal highlights – such as the Banana Nutella pancakes (or roti) you can grab off one of the many street vendors around town!

If You’re In Old Phuket Town

This charming little area is a remnant from Phuket’s old tin-mining days and boasts gorgeous Sino-Portugese architecture that make it distinct from the rest of the island. Even just a quick stroll around this town provides a lovely cultural break, and it’s the perfect place for an authentic taste of Phuket.

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to eat in Phuket what to drink in Phuket old phuket town zimplex mixology laboratory shots cocktails drinks phuket

  • Tu Kab Khao has been highly rated on the Michelin Guide for a while now and is definitely worth a visit, just make sure you book in advance as it’s always crowded at dinner time!
  • For piping-hot and delicious noodles, try Hana Café+Ramen or one of the street vendors around the island selling customisable soup noodles for as little as 40 Baht (less than $10).
  • If you’ve left the kiddos at home, check out Zimplex Mixology Laboratory for the most interesting and Instagrammable shots you’ve ever seen (or drunk), then continue the night with local favourites The Library or The Column where you’ll often enjoy live music and cheap tipples.

If You’re Staying In Laguna, Phuket

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to eat in Phuket what to drink in Phuket banyan tree laguna boat lagoon

Laguna is easily one of the most well-kept and family-friendly areas in Phuket, known for its upscale restaurants and boutiques, manicured greenery, abundance of residential complexes and hotels, and of course, the scenic Laguna Golf Course. More than anything you’ll find expat families with children who attend school in Phuket and retirees who spend their days enjoying life in the sun and sand. As such, while there are local eateries around, you’ll find more cuisines here catered to international tastes (often with a Thai element though!) with suitable choices for both parents and children.

  • If, like us, you can gorge endlessly on sushi, try Yuzu Japanese Restaurant & Bar which offers All-You-Can-Eat sushi for 599 Baht (less than $130)
  • The ever-popular Phuket Coffee Lab serves freshly-brewed cappuccinos and hearty sandwiches, eggs and smoothie bowls
  • Kenny Rogers Roasters (yes, that Kenny Rogers) is a family-oriented sports bar-cum-casual dining restaurant with an extensive food menu and plenty of options for kids.

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to eat in Phuket what to drink in Phuket nanami japanese bbq yakiniku laguna boat lagoon
Other restaurants in the area we love are Nanami Yakiniku where you can grab sushi and have yourself a Japanese BBQ with quality meat and Bocconcino which is a stylish Italian restaurant nestled on top of the lagoon that offers unparalleled views to accompany your meal. There’s also Tawai which is popular for its yummy Thai food (such as the steamed fish that can be ordered as a fillet so you don’t have to deal with the pesky bones) and the fact that it has its own Cooking School so you can take the taste of Thailand back home.

If You’re Near Layan Or Bang Tao Phuket

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to eat in Phuket what to drink in Phuket bang tao surin hugo hub phuket beach bar beach restaurant

For a local meal that does not pander to mild tourist palates, you can’t go wrong with C’est Bien (yes, the name is misleading) in Layan. Best enjoyed in groups so you can try multiple dishes, this family-run restaurant has developed a loyal following in recent years for its consistently delicious food. You can ask for dishes to be made more or less spicy – such as the massaman curry – but you may need to employ Google Translate. If you’re lucky, they’ll have just made a seafood run and you can order the crab meat curry with vermicelli noodles that comes with a whole crab instead of the usual scant pieces of crab meat.

The Bang Tao area has been rapidly developing since before COVID and is now home to dozens of restaurants and beach bars. As such, you’re spoilt for choice as a visitor, but maybe a little too spoilt? Listen, when you’re on a beach bed watching the waves with a fresh coconut in your hand, you’re probably having a good time regardless of where you are. But in case you’re looking for a recommendation anyway, our favourites are Beach Pig – where you can watch live music, enjoy an expertly-made cocktail and pop down to rent jet skis and other water sports equipment – and Hugo Hub Phuket – which has multiple food trucks, bean bag chairs and fresh seafood.

The Rest Of Phuket

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to eat in Phuket what to drink in Phuket three monkeys flying hanuman

  • Savoey Seafood in Patong is a notable mention where your kids are likely to be awed by all the creatures in fish tanks
  • Pha Chom Tawan in Kamala is a family-run restaurant that offers delicious local dishes and spectacular views (try to go on a clear day before 6pm to catch the amazing sunset)
  • We’d be remiss not to mention Three Monkeys Phuket – surrounded by luscious greenery, it has unique interiors that make for excellent pictures, and delectable Southern Thai cuisine – which is situated very close to Hanuman World where you can go ziplining, abseiling, and take in the scenery on a gorgeous Sky Walk
  • There’s a little row of picturesque shophouses next to the Index Living Mall which includes restaurants of varying cuisines, such as Crust for fresh Italian food with daily specials (try the Scallop Risotto) and Bollywood Phuket for authentic Indian eats (like Chicken Tandoori and Biryani) and unique fusion dishes (think Masala Prawn Tacos!).

Where To Stay In Phuket

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to eat in Phuket what to drink in Phuket hot springs resort and beach spa

Any touristy place has plenty of options to stay, but we know not all of them are family-friendly. Which is why we have done our research and found the best Phuket resorts and hotels for families. From well-known international chains like the Rosewood and JW Marriott to the more local treasures like Splash Beach Resort and the Sunwing hotels, we’ve rounded up the best so you find the perfect pick for your family.

However, there is one just outside of Phuket we’d like to mention here. The Hot Spring Beach Resort And Spa is only a 20-minute drive from the Phuket International Airport (or an hour if you’re coming from further south like Bang Tao) and definitely worth the trip. There are standard hotel rooms as well as villa-type rooms that look out to the huge winding swimming pool. There are multiple natural hot springs (40°C) and an icy pool (16°C), and it’s recommended that you go back and forth between the two, just be warned, you might get a little dizzy after a while! It’s the perfect getaway for a family who is looking for a unique experience, and did we mention it’s only a short drive to the new (and beautiful) Aquella Golf Course?

Things To Note

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to eat in Phuket what to drink in Phuket splash jungle water park

  • High season tends to run from November to March, during this time there are fewer storms, but prices are significantly higher for just about everything
  • If you’re going to take your kids to Patong, it’s better to go during the day time, the stories about Soi Bangla getting lewd and lascivious after the sun goes down are not exaggerated
  • Eatigo is a booking app worth getting as it offers great discounts at hundreds of restaurants in Phuket (though the best ones usually run during off-peak season)
  • Grab & Bolt will probably be your best friends for transport – Phuket doesn’t have anything close to the public transport system in Hong Kong, so your best chances will be to rent a car or rely on these apps (if you don’t want to be ripped off by the taxis and tuk-tuks)
  • If you’re riding on or driving a motorbike, WEAR A HELMET. Aside from the obvious safety factor, local police often pull tourists over to slap them with an extortionate fine for ignoring traffic rules
  • There a several places (particularly local/beachside spots) that may charge extra if you try to pay with a credit card, so make sure to always have cash on you, contactless debit cards should also work.

Have a blast in Phuket, mamas!
