Pulling from their archive of icons, the IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 is an ergonomic, modernized reboot of the 1970s anti-magnetic classic. It was designed by Gérald Genta, and showcases his trademark elegance-meets-industry aesthetic, put through a decidedly IWC filter. (his portfolio includes the Patek Nautilus and the AP Royal Oak).
The thick indices are aviator-level legible, as they float above the shimmer of the dial’s precise grid pattern of lines and dots, almost resembling mini American flags. As anticipated, and to the pleasure of both IWC and Genta fans, there are visible screws on the slick bezel.
Going back to the watch’s ergonomically-focused remix, the striking H-link bracelet tapers, while the case ring subtly curves. Between that and the relatively short distance between lugs, this sophisticatedly reengineered scientist’s timepiece is highly wearable on all wrists.
