Seiko fans may remember how the 2019 Seiko 5 relaunch was meant to sort-of replace the discontinued SKX series. It certainly has a rightful place in the Seiko universe, but it doesn’t fill the void the way this SRPK17 does. It’s a mostly one-to-one reissue of the 1968 SKX sport style, in celebration of Seiko 5 Sports’ 55th.
Quintessentially Seiko, its cushion case and pragmatic line-forward dial are rooted in history while also being handsomely distinct, regardless of what you know about it. Still, having the original blue SPORTS logo, instead of the contemporary Seiko 5 shield, adds welcome nostalgia. Another very Seiko quality is that the SRPK17 may be a limited edition, but with 15,555 pieces, it’s an accessible ground floor for a would-be investment.
And while it looks like it time-traveled here from 1968, this watch features a very modern 100 meters of water resistance and the hacking 4R36 movement.
