The word “iconic” isn’t usually a term we’d use to describe a portable bluetooth speaker, but that’s exactly what this one is going for. With a look modeled after Marshall amps that have been bringing the noise since the 1960s, the Emberton Portable Speaker is like a shrink-ray version of those with a pebbled black exterior, woven metal grill, and white Marshall script. But you don’t buy this thing to look at it — sound is what matters and the Emberton delivers.
It’s got an impressive max output of 86 decibels, thanks to dual two-inch, ten-watt dynamic drivers. Pair that with Marshall’s own True Stereophonic technology that delivers sound multi-directionally, and everyone gathered ‘round will hear the music the way it was intended. As for portability, the 1.5 pound unit has a rugged silicone shell to protect it from the bumps and bruises of life on the road, and the IPX7 water-resistance rating is good for splashes, spills, and even a brief submersion.
On a full charge (which takes about three hours) the Emberton can play music for twenty hours, but if you need to get going right now, a quick twenty minute plug-in will give you enough juice for five hours of listening. The Bluetooth 5.0 connection has a range of 30 feet and there’s a dedicated pairing button up top. Everything else is controlled by a sleek and golden multi-function control knob that you can twist, push, and toggle to turn the unit on and off, and control playback and volume.
Not every speaker can live up to the rock and roll look that makes Marshall so iconic, but the Emberton has the sound, battery life, and tough-built exterior to make it more than worthy.
