What do you do when it’s your dream to own a cabin in the woods, but you don’t have the cash to spare? You build one in the backyard, of course.
Nestled on the Lake Washington waterfront in Seattle, this detached additional dwelling unit (DADU), was commissioned by the owners who were looking for a work-from-home retreat. It soon became that as well as a guest house, boat storage, and garage, all while anchoring the west side of the property.
Borrowing its form from the idea of an upturned boat, an ancient Japanese architectural technique called shou sugi ban was used to preserve the wood by charring it with fire, and then given a whitewashed pine interior.
The DADU contains a bathroom with a shower opening up to a large wall-to-wall skylight, a kitchenette, and living room. Custom lighting and garage door brackets create a cohesive, polished space. The cabin also features a boat storage area beneath.
